"Countdown to the Comet" Posts Huge Ratings PDF Print E-mail
Jul 23, 2008 at 12:32 AM

Jake here, and with the awesome news that Avatar blew away the competition in the ratings!  Avatar goes out with a bang, just as well all wanted.

USAToday.com has the ratings, and the Avatar finale movie "Sozin's Comet" placed as the (tied for) #4 most watched program on cable last week.  It was tied for second overall in terms of scripted programming for the week in cable, bringing in an Avatar record 5.6 million viewers last Saturday night.  One DF admin, however, made a bold prediction about two weeks ago, saying the finale would get 5-6 million viewers in total, and his name starts with a J.  Smile  Yes that person definitely wins for predictions.

For the week Avatar also grabbed the last 3 spots on the top 15.  317 ranked 13 with 4.5 million viewers, 316 ranked 14 with 4.2 million and the movie combined of 314/315 brought in 4.0 million at number 15.  Probably the most encouraging news is the ratings went up each day.  317 even brought in more then 219/220, the previously highest viewed episode before.  For sure 314-321 is one of the best stretches for Avatar, and has made us all forget the first 13 episodes (and the horror of 309!).  Actually, 304, 306, 308, 310-311 and 312 weren't bad, in my opinion.  I take that back, all of season 3 was awesome except for 309. ;)  Maybe 307...

Hat tip to Dylan, who is on vacation and did not invite the rest of the DF-ers, for finding this. :)

Preparing For The Big Night PDF Print E-mail
Jul 19, 2008 at 06:16 PM

Jake here, with your guide for an ultimate fan experience for the Avatar finale night!

We've all known it was coming.  We endured excruciatingly long waits (it is approxmiately 596 days, or over 19 and a half months, since the season 2 finale first aired, yikes!), we've endured trailers trying to catch our interest (like we really need it).  There have been episodes airing early in the UK, Canada and first-to-DVD episodes.  We've seen Aang kick Zhao's butt (remember, he's an Olympic swimmer!), but then get his own butt kicked by Azula... twice!

So the confrontation we have all been waiting for is here.  The day we never thought would arrive.  The day with so many mixed emotions, excitement for the finale, but disappointment because this is the last time original episodes will be produced with these characters in the animated show.  [Note: To end speculation, no plans to continue Avatar with new characters have been made.  It's still an option, but wouldn't happen any time soon anyway).

So now, Avatar fan, how do you spend the hours leading up to the finale we've all waited so long for?  Here are a few tips:

1) Pick out your favorite episodes and watch them on DVD or online (legally!).  Watch series classics like "Lake Laogai" and "The Deserter," maybe re-watch the two finales.  Or maybe you could just watch the last 10 or so episodes of season 3.

2) Watch Avatar fan trailers!  We have lots of talented people in the Avatar fandom, not the least of which is the video-makers.  Check out this Youtube link and watch some fan trailers for the finale.  It will get your blood going before you watch one of the biggest finales in TV history!

3) If you've got a laptop and wish to discuss the finale live, join the finale chat on Skype I am putting together!  Details I have in another post, but go to www.skype.com if you haven't yet, download it and create a name.  Then go to here and that should redirect you to the chat.  If not, add pooldude256 to your contact list, and click on the link in my Skype mood.  Dylan (Dylan0513) will also be available on Skype, and can add you if you are still having problems.

4) Grab your popcorn, soda and all other party essentials and turn on the television to Nickelodeon at 7:58 pm EST (so you don't miss a thing!).  Enjoy the finale, because, as Dylan would say, these are the final episodes by this "original, magical crew." Tongue out  Just sit back and watch the amazing action, writing and animation.  And if you already haven't, I guarantee you will have a crush (or man crush, if you're a guy) on Mark Hamill/Ozai in this finale.  "PREPARE TO DDDDIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!"

Don't let shipping make or break the show.  As you might think, the writers have thrown us in a loop in the last two episodes, so some of you may be given hope, but keep in mind Mike and Bryan have said time and again Kataang is in the "DNA" of the show.  This is coming from a Zutarian as well, the ship has a 0.01% chance of happening, and the only scenario I see it happening in is if Aang would die.  Still, we don't know how much or if there will be any (cliched) Kataang in the finale.  But I digress.

You guys may be thinking about the future of the fandom - and of this site.  Well I plan on keeping DF online, as Nick has plans to continue the show through "mini-episodes" and "global games", as well as the live-action movies.  So make sure to keep checking back!  I'm also planning on another "Avatar Fan Awards" sometime after the finale, which will likely be run out of the Avatar Olympics site.  And there will be more DF events and such in the future.  Who knows - maybe we'll get caught up with characters, episodes and creatures!

The only thing that may change is the server - I'd like to move the site off the paid GoDaddy server to a less expensive or free one.  If a change does occur I will let you all know beforehand.  But DF will definitely be going forward, staying as a home for the Avatar fandom throughout time.

New Fan Trailer Discussion PDF Print E-mail
Jul 17, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Jake here, and now at the DF Blogs is a new discussion of the finale trailer, including the one that began airing on Monday night, as well as the character commercials, and more.

Josh, Jeff and Alisa, all from the podcast, got together Tuesday night to record this discussion.  This is in no way an actual podcast, it's just the three of them discussing the trailers and such heading into the finale.  But it is really good - so I encourage you to listen in and give Jeff a comment on the blogs on the above link.  Let us know what you think!

Jul 16, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Dylan here. Just a couple of things I have to say before we head into the new episode stretch starting tomorrow night. First, I want to emphasize again to enjoy the episodes, guys. Forget fandom bickaries, forget your theories that aren't gong to happen, just watch and enjoy. Tomorrow night is "The Southern Raiders" at 8:00 PM on Nick. This is the last Eden of Avatar. The only episode that has not yet been spoiled. I have no clue what is going to happen. On top of that it's going to be an amazing episode. Enjoy it. The podcast for discussion on "The Southern Raiders" will be up here before 8 AM EDT on Friday morning. Make sure to check it out.

EDIT: Jake here, and I would like to announce there will be a fandom-wide Skype chat on Saturday night for the finale.  I will post the link on here on Friday or Saturday.  Don't have Skype?  Don't know what Skype is?  This is for you then:

1) Skype is a free online chat client.  You can chat in multiple formats, including text chat and voice chat.  Our chat will obviously be a text chat, and that's all that will be required of anyone.

2) Go to http://skype.com if you do not have Skype!  Download it and create a new account, and when you click the link I will post, it will launch Skype automatically and take you to the room.

3) Spoilers from the book are prohibited until they are actually seen.  Also, there is a slight chance the finale may pop up on the internet before Saturday night (DVD Pacific notified me today they have shipped the Book 3, Volume 4 DVD, so people may have it by Friday or Saturday.) and those spoilers will be prohibited as well.  There will be a discussion going on all day long and it will be heavily moderated.  No spoilers from the book will be allowed in the pre-finale chat either.  You can discuss events as they happen live with the East Coast airing.

4) Add me (Skype name "pooldude256") as a friend and as a back-up I will link to the chat on my Skype.  I'm not sure exactly what the link does, or if it will work for everyone.  Also I'm not sure how many people a Skype chat can hold, hehe.  I won't actually be there to watch it live, but there will be many people there I am sure.

Now a question - should there be a separate chat for the West Coast airing, so those on the West can enjoy it with the comfort of other fans discussing it live as well?  I'd need more moderators for a separate chat (I still need moderators for the regular chat - so !).

Not that this really needs to be said, but make sure you tune in for the finale, regardless if it pops up online before or not.  It's the last collection of original Avatar episodes and it's going to rock, it's the moment we've all been waiting for.  Get a seat in front of the biggest TV in your house and enjoy.

Jake here, and I just had to make that the title. :)

Well, 312 has aired in the US, and following it was an amazingly bada--- commercial that every Avatar fan must see at least 150,000 times this week.  It is THAT amazing.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=sR8wRgQsHHc

Thanks to mike951 from ASN for uploadinga pretty good quality of the commercial!  The animation does look stunning, and two of my favorite lines (both voice acting wise and bada---ness wise), probably of the whole series, are back-to-back:

Aang: ENOUGH!

Ozai: Prepare to DDIIIIIIEEEEE!

If Zach Eisen and Mark Hammil aren't nominated for some award after this finale, then I'm going to be p-ssed because Ozai's line especially (and I take it for the entire finale) is so amazingly delivered it isn't even funny.

I have so many chills running down my spine right now I don't want to think about anything else.  Why must Nick us like this and make us wait 5 more days?!  Oh, the inhumanity!

EDIT: Jeff (Serpent_Guard) has posted the commercial in two different downloadable formats, for your dissecting pleasure!

AVI: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=34E0H1MQ

EDIT #2: In the spirit of waiting Josh (i_anything_the_wicked) has recorded a nice little song to the beat of Uncle Iroh's "Long Long Way To Ba Sing Se" song.  It is titled "It's a Long Long Way To The Finale".  It's only 2 verses but its really good - http://dongbufeng.net/audio/Finale2.mp3.
