Games & Activities PDF Print E-mail
Well they have to do something to have fun, don’t they? Here’s a breakdown of the games and other fun activities the citizens of the Avatar world participate in.

The Gan jin's Ancient Redemption Ritual

ImageOne hundred years ago was the last time one of these took place. Many have taken place throughout the history of the Gan jin tribe, however. Basically, the patriarch of the tribe at the time is designated to carry the "Sacred Orb" from the Great Eastern Gate to the Great Western Gate. Remember, the story with theImage different backgrounds but the guy wasn't moving that much? Anyway, the last patriarch who attempted to complete the ritual, Jin Wei (pictured to the right), was unable to complete his mission. Whether it be because he was sick and unable to continue (like the Zhangs say) or he was ambushed by a member of the Zhang tribe (as the Gan jins think), I guess we;ll never know. But now, this ritual has since been retired, now that both tribes' homes were destroyed by the Fire Nation, and they now both live peacefully in the Earth Kingdom capital of Bai Seng Sei.

Ice-Dodging

ImageThis is not really a game, but it is an activity. Every water tribesperson must complete the task of ice-dodging. It’s a right of passage, and usually fathers will take their kids out when they reach the age of 14. Bato describes it as a “ceremonial test of wisdom, bravery and trust.”

Basically this entails the navigation of the boat. It is unknown how a single person would do this by themselves, so I guess they take three young tribe members out at a time. One of the members steers the boat and tells the other two what to do. The other two members listen to what the one who steers the boat says. Both control one of the sails of the boat, one the mainsail and the other the gin. The one who controls the mainsail has the position of bravery, and the controller of the gin’s position is all about trust.

The task here is to navigate a ship throughout a field of icebergs, such as the one Aang was stuck in for 100 years. The one who steers is the main navigator and uses a large wooden handle attached to the stern to push to boat in the precise direction.

Ice-dodging does not require a field of icebergs, however, that is how it has been done for years. If you want to ice-dodge in an area where there is an absence of icebergs, you can use a field of rocks in the water, or anything else pretty much.

The kids must succeed or fail without the help of their superior (which, as listed above, is usually their father). Upon successful completion, the navigator receives the mark of the wise (and up-side-down curve with a small circle underneath), the one who held onto the mainsail receives the mark of the brave (a backwards crescent) and the one who controlled the gin receives the mark of the trusted (simply an up-side-down curve).

Injuries can occur to those who attempt this, but if you pass, it’s all worth it.

This activity is done exclusively of the water tribes. However, outsiders may participate, and are granted the title of "honorary water tribe member."

Airball

ImageThe airbenders keep, or kept, themselves out of trouble by playing this game called airball, which requires muchos skillos. The playing field usually has more than 130 poles, sometimes more or less. The poles are wooden with stripes of light blue lining the top of the pole. However, the poles are unevenly sized and placed in random spots across a 100 foot+ court.Image

They use a cylindrical ball, similar to a soccer ball or a basketball. Sometimes they will play with more than just 2 players, usually with 2-3 offensive players for each team, in addition to the one goalkeeper. Air nomads are the only ones who can play this game, as it requires airbending to get the ball moving and defend it.

When in play, the ball bounces off random poles until someone either scores or bends the ball away. The goal is in the shape of a square with rounded edges and a center circle that spins Imagewhen the ball goes through it. If you get the ball through the goal, which requires either a wealth of skill or luck, your team would get points. Like with most competitions, the team/player with the most points at the end of the competition wins.

Agni Kai

ImageA very important event to the firebenders, an Agni Kai is a fire duel. When two firebenders have a dispute, whether it’s a disagreement about the war strategy, or a matter of disrespect, or both, the two benders meet in a large stadium filled with hundreds of seats and anyone from the fire nation is welcome. But military officials and leaders’ and their families get prime seating up front.

Agni Kai’s usually take place during sunset, as usually everyone has nothing else to do anyway. In traditional duels, the two benders kneel on opposite sides on the court each with the covering of a dark red cloth with a yellowish outside lining, and at the sound of a gong, each of the benders drop their cloth, and face each other. Most of the times men will duel other men, and never do they wear a shirt, but they do have long, dark pants on.Image

After a few seconds of silence and drama, the fighting begins. No weapons are allowed except your hands and your feet, and, of course, fire. Many times the loser will either not make it out of the duel alive, or at least with severe injury or bruising. There is no referee, so the benders must judge when the fight is to end, usually by forfeit or demise.

A little bit of knowledge…

"Agni" is the name of the Hindu God of Fire and the word "Kai" is Japanese for "meeting".

Pai Sho

ImagePlayed all around the world, this popular board game requires a thorough strategy. Pai Sho, Uncle Iroh’s favorite game, looks much like Chinese checkers. You can move pieces across the board at virtually any rate, as long as the move is legal, that is.

The game is played on a large circular board with four smaller, equivalent triangles, all of which meet in the center and touch one corner of the outside circle once. The traditional design is two white triangles, diagonal from each other, and the other two are red-ish. The rest of the board is colored in a yellowish type color.

You play with round tiles and there are different types of tiles. For example, the lotus tile, as featured in The Waterbending Scroll, is a tile most players consider insignificant. But different strategies, such as Iroh’s, require the special tile. Other designs on the tiles include ships, wheels, etc.

The ultimate object of the game, as with so many others, is to win. At the conclusion of the game, the winner collects all the tiles on the board for himself.

Some of the most skilled Pai Sho players are Monk Gyatso (when he was alive, that is) and General Iroh. The game hasn’t been mentioned much more though.

Penguin Sledding

A very fun game that the citizens of the “poles” participate in. Before the invasion, penguin sledding was the most popular game at the South Pole, especially among little children, but older citizens also did it to relieve stress as well.Image

Basically you find a hill, and find a penguin you can fit on, and ride it down the hill. Now nobody knows exactly how the penguins feel about all this, but they don’t seem to mind, as long as ya feed ‘um first.

Elephant Koi Riding

ImageYes, you guessed it. You ride an elephant koi, which are found mostly in the Southern Ocean, and are very common off of Kyoshi Island. Anywho, you first find an elephant koi, and then you hop on it and hold onto its large fin for dear life! And then the elephant koi does the rest! Caution: you may get wet on this ride!

The Omashu Mail System

A fun little game invented by Bumi of the Earth Kingdom. That’s Aang’s old friend Bumi, not the 112-year-old insane King. The mail delivery system in the city of Omashu is through a bunch of slides. Using Earthbending, the “postal workers” send the packages asliding down the slides. The concept of this “activity” is to get inside one of the carts and ride the slide. The chutes are narrow, so you must try Imageto stay on track, and avoid the cargo coming in from other slides, as they do intersect with other slides at some point.

But the guards don’t really like it when you use their slides for fun, so watch out. If you get caught, or if your cart gets thrown off the track and something gets vandalized, you must face the King of Omashu and he shall decide your fate. If we learned anything from Aang’s experience, it’s that the cabbage guy means business!

Wooden Card Game

ImageAnother world-wide phenomenon, except not as popular as Pai Sho. This game doesn’t really have a name, and no one (well except for the writers) knows what it’s really based off of. On the face of each card is a symbol of one of the four bending elements. But other than that, this game is a real mystery.
