Take a look at some of the people behind ATLA! Below is info on the co-creators, the head writer, our resident martial arts expert, and many of the voice actors of Avatar! Enjoy! Michael Dante DiMartino, Co-Creator/Executive Producer/Story Editor Award-winning filmmaker Michael DiMartino began his training at the Rhode Island School of Design where he graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the Film and Animation Department. After relocating to Los Angeles, he took a job as a director at Film Roman where he worked for six years on the primetime animated series "King of the Hill," "Family Guy" and "Mission Hill." During his tenure at Film Roman, DiMartino animated and directed the short animated film "Atomic Love," which has gone on to screen at festivals across the country, including Sundance and the Los Angeles Film Festival. The film also aired this year when it was selected to be part of the Nicktoons Film Festival on the Nicktoons Channel. DiMartino is Co-Creator and Executive Producer of "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Thanks to FilmMakers.com for this info! Bryan Konietzko, Co-Creator/Executive Producer/Art Director Bryan Konietzko attended the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration. Upon moving to Los Angeles, Konietzko worked as a character designer at Film Roman for Fox's primetime series "Family Guy." He soon moved to Assistant Director for two more Film Roman shows, "Mission Hill" and "King of the Hill" working beside Animation Director Michael DiMartino. Soon after, Konietzko became a Storyboard Artist and later the Art Director for the Nickelodeon animated series "Invader Zim." Konietzko is Co-Creator, Executive Producer and Art Director of "Avatar: The Last Airbender." Thanks to FilmMakers.com for this info! Aaron Ehasz is a veteran in the world of animation, working on FOX's futuristic cartoon, Futurama. Aaron also wrote an episode of Mission Hill, an animated show that aired on UPN. Mr. Ehasz has a career in live-action shows as well, writing one episode for NBC's Ed and UPN's The Mullets. Currently, Aaron serves as the Head Writer for Avatar, as well as Co-Producer (season 1)/Co-Executive Producer (season 2+). Sifu Kisu is the martial arts consultant for Avatar. He is the third-generation of the great Harmonious Fist Chinese Athletic Association. Sifu learned all he knows about martial arts from his teacher, Kenneth Hui. Sifu has appeared in both the Nickelodeon Avatar Behind-the-Scenes segment and in commercials explaining the martial arts used by the benders of the four nation. Kisu's job is to teach anyone wanting to learn the martial art of their choice. Check out his site for more information. Zach is a fairly new actor in the business. He had a few roles prior to Avatar, most notably as Andrew on Little Bill and Pablo on The Backyardigans. Zach got cast in 2004 to voice Aang, the Avatar, as Mitchel Musso's replacement. He was later cast as the title character in the animated film The Ant Bully. Zach is a young and rising star, sure to land many more roles in the years ahead. Mae Margaret Whitman (born June 9, 1988) is an American actress who participated in State Of Grace, along with Alia Shawkat, among others. She played the title role, 12-year-old Grace, on the show. She also guest stars on the TV show Arrested Development, where she plays the role of Ann Veal, George-Michael Bluth's strange friend. Mae started out going to an audition for a voice over in a commercial about Tyson Chicken. She got the job, beating out her own mother for it. This caused a lot of surprise to her mother Pat Musick (who voiced Haru's mother in episode 6 of Avatar) who is an accomplished actress herself, but it was satisfying to her finding out young Mae had gotten some of the skills she did. At the age of four, Mae made her film debut, acting alongside Meg Ryan in When a Man Loves a Woman. She played Ryan's daughter in the movie. She has also appeared on Independence Day as the President's daughter, (alongside Will Smith) and in Hope Floats, with Sandra Bullock. Mae now has a recurring role as Ann Veal on FOX's Arrested Development. Jack Patrick De Sena (born December 6, 1987 in Boston, Massachusetts) is an actor best known for his work on the sketch comedy series All That, having joined the show's cast at the start of its 7th season in 2001. His family moved to Irvine, California in 1999 and he attends school there. He was a very active member of the Comedy Sportz Team (a comic improvization team that participates in games as seen on Whose Line is it Anyway?) He has been seen with actress Allie Stephen contsantly. They have been said to be "going out". "We are really close, she always comes to my shows and I always go to stuff with her." states Jack. Info from Wikipedia Dante Basco has starred in Steven Spielberg's 1991 classic Hook with Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. Many regard the film as a classic. Basco has himself achieved a status with his role as "Rufio," the charismatic stripe-haired leader of the Lost Boys. Since then he has been in But I'm a Cheer leader (1999), and Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005) as the character Prince Zuko. He also stars in American Dragon: Jake Long as Jake Long. Info from Wikipedia Makoto Iwamatsu (born December 10, 1933) is a Japanese actor. He is also known as Mako. He was born in Kobe, Japan, moved to the United States of America in the late 1940s, joined the military in the 1950s. He became a naturalized citizen in 1956. His first cinema role was in the 1959 film Never So Few. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1966 film The Sand Pebbles, and for a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for the 1976 musical Pacific Overtures. He is also known for his role as the Wizard in the two Conan movies opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer. In 2001 he appeared as Admiral Yamamoto in Pearl Harbor. He has a motion picture star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7095 Hollywood Blvd. Cartoon fans may know him even better as the voice actor of villain Aku in the American cartoon series Samurai Jack, and the parody of Aku, Achoo, in Duck Dodgers, as well as General Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Sadly, and very unfortunately, Mako passed away on July 21st, 2006, due to esophageal cancer. Our prayers are certainly with Mako's friends and family as he leaves us in this world. Grey DeLisle, Princess AzulaShe had a rough childhood: Her father left the family, and her mother was addicted to . She was largely raised by her grandmother, Eva Flores Ruth, a vocalist who performed with salsa legend Tito Puente. Grey was heavily into bands like The Cure, but her mother, who had become a born-again Pentecostal, set a strict rule of no secular music. In her late teens, she started singing old gospel tunes, and started in the world of stand-up comedy, on the advice of a close friend. In her comedy routine, DeLisle was able to imitate voices very well, and was then advised to take a shot at voice acting. Her first starring role came in the English version of Crayon Shin-chan, as the voice of characters Cosmo and Uma (which will begin airing on Swim Monday through Thursday the week of August 21 and 28). She didn't get another starring role until 1998, but she has since become one of America's most beloved and well-respected voice actresses. She has even learned how to speak Japanese thanks to fellow voice actors Janice Kawaye and Keone Young for her role as Yumi on Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi. Other voice acting roles have been in many computer and video games such as Escape from Monkey Island, Baldur's Gate and many Star Wars games. DeLisle has also released four music CDs, filled with -inspired folk and Americana tunes, with a few gospel-style songs as well. In 2002, DeLisle married musician Murry Hammond, the bassist for the Old 97's, after a few months of a long-distance relationship. They were even featured in an episode of The Learning Channel program A Wedding Story. Jessie Flower, Toph (Previously voiced Meng)Jessie Flower was born August 18,1994 in southern Indiana. She now lives with her mom, her turtle, and a very large collection of stuffed animals in Los Angeles, California. When Jessie was 4 years old her mom moved to L.A. where Jessie decided she wanted to be in a commercial; and in a commercial she was. In fact, she has been in several commercials including a Barbie commercial, and a Mitsubishi commercial that actually filmed in Japan. To her credits she adds print work, television guest star roles, student films, and live stage performances. This work includes the Disney Catalog, a Volkswagen New Beatle online advertisement, “General Hospital”, “St. Charles Place”, “Meet Me In St. Louis”(the role of Tootie), “Annie”(the role of Annie), and “Strong Medicine”; just to name a few. Jessie’s voice, however, has been heard even more than her face has been seen. Her voice over career started with a radio spot, but quickly grew to include movies and television. ADR (Audio Digital Recording) work is one of her specialties as well. For example, her voice can be heard in: “Finding Nemo”, “Spider Man 2”, “Son of the Mask”, “The Bad News Bears”, and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. Jessie has done quite a bit of work for Disney. One of her favorite roles so far is Chaca in the animated feature, “Kronk’s New Groove.” She also gets to voice this role in the Disney series, “The Emperor’s New School.” Jessie has a great singing voice, and would someday like to record an album. Although she loves the arts, Jessie aspires to be a heart surgeon when she grows up. When Jessie is not in the studio, she likes to read, draw, and spend time with her friends. She also enjoys trips back to Indiana to visit her grandparents.
