The Gan jins are one of the Earth Kingdom tribes who has had their village destroyed by the fire nation. And that number is rising almost every day. Anywho, these refugees, who now make their home in the Earth Kingdom capital of Ba-Seng-Se, have a long history with a fellow tribe who just happens to have been migrating to the same place at the exact time as they were, the Zhangs.
The two have a fundamental disagreement about what happened 100 years ago during the Gan jins ancient redemption ritual.
One hundred years ago, the Gan jins claimed Jinwei, the patriarc of their tribe, was ambushed while transporting the "sacred orb" from the great Easte gate, to the great Weste gate, which signifies the sun's rising and setting. The ambusher was Weijin, a member of the Zhang tribe. The Zhangs strongly disagree, however.
After some crafty words from the Avatar, the two tribes realized they should put their differences behind them and move forward, onto a bigger and better life, together, as one tribe. One must think, however, what they are now called. The Zhins? The Gan angs? I'm just tossing ideas around here...
