Toph Beifong’s parents, Lao and Poppy Beifong, are rich and very-well known across the Earth Kingdom. Just the flash of a special passport at the ferry station proved how powerful the Beifong name is in the nation. The symbol of the family is the “flying boar.”
It is unclear what business the Beifongs are in, only that it gives them wide-recognition and tons of money. Up until Aang and the gang arrived, however, the world didn’t know that Lao and Poppy had a child. It is suggested that Lao was the one to set very strict rules for her to follow, most likely because of her blindness. One of the rules was she was not allowed to roam around the courtyard around the house unescorted. The Beifongs kept Toph a huge secret and limited her life for the past 12 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Beifong had no idea that Toph was a master Earthbender, nor did her not-so-bright teacher Master Yu. Lao and Poppy tried very hard to protect their daughter, and both thought essentially because of her blindness she is weak. Boy, were they wrong!
You may be wondering why the Beifongs have a surname, and no one else in the world (that we know of) does. Well, apparently it depends on the different ures, and this family definitely lives much differently than any other. The main reason, though, is because of the business they’re in, or so somebody told me.
Most likely the Beifongs will come into play more as the show moves through the second and third seasons. At the end of “The Blind Bandit,” Lao Beifong is seen offering a reward to Master Yu and Xin Fu for the safe return of his daughter. Likely the Yu-Fu combo will be seen again.
