Jake here, and of course we all know "The Last Airbender" made its theatrical debut at 12 midnight this morning in theaters across America. I saw the showing and have some thoughts.
I found myself trying to "correct" the movie the whole way through. I was trying to not be as critical, but I couldn't help it. Non-series lovers are more likely to enjoy it, I think.
Acting wasn't terrible, but my main complaint lies with the writing. Um, what was the plot? I know, I know. Every one of us knows what it was. But M. Night tried to tie certain things, and throw flashbacks in, at the weirdest times. And it felt so rushed, at only an hour and a half. The Siege of the North was far less epic than the show, mainly because there was no build up. If M. Night really consulted closely on the script with Mike and Bryan, wouldn't they have told him a few things about writing?
The theater I went to was near-packed, but no applause at the end (of course, not everyone that likes a movie has to applaud). I have hope for the 2nd one, if it's picked up. The story in season 2 is more workable, while season 1 visited a new town every episode. All in all, I didn't hate it. I don't want to hate it. I'll probably buy the DVD, and watch it again sometime.
Oh, and don't waste money on the 3D, there was none to speak of. Unless I just got ripped off and the theater didn't have the 3D (which I paid for) I didn't notice anything.
Noah Ringer wasn't bad for his first film, and Dev Patel was ok. Nicola Peltz, eh. I didn't hate her, at least. The girl who plays Azula? Just creepy...
Well again, I have hopes for the second movie, should Paramount want it. I saw somewhere an expected $50 million opening weekend, which is something at least. Not a summer blockbuster, but it may be enough for Paramount to want a 2nd. We'll have to see how it does in the coming weeks. |
