Second Year Anniversary!
Feb 21, 2007 at 02:46 PM

Today, February 21st, 2007, marks the 2-year anniversary of Avatar's premiere in the US!  Since then 40 episodes (costing Nickelodeon over $40 million) have been broadcasted to millions of people in the USA (and other countries are also viewing Avatar on their television screens, though none I know of have ended season 2), dozens and dozens of fansites and forums have been constructed in honor of the show, millions of dollars have been spent by consumers on dozens of Avatar-themed merchandise, a roller coaster has been constructed after the show, and Avatar has been broadcast in over 20 countries worldwide!  Also we've had an announcement about a possible trilogy of Avatar live-action films, and the show has gobbled up 3 Annie Awards and two Pulcinella Awards!  And it has all led to today when the Avatar article on Wikipedia has become the featured article of the day!

Through all this time, though, we have had tragedy.  Last summer, beloved actor Mako, the brilliant voice actor behind Iroh, passed away due to esophageal cancer.  To this day we still remember Mako and he will continue to be greatly missed not only by the Avatar universe but also by the real world.  We should all take this time to reflect on both the good and bad of Avatar.

Avatar article is on Wikipedia's Main Page

Dylan0513 here. The Avatar article on Wikipedia is on the Main Page for a day. It will be up from Tuesday at 8 PM EST to Wednesday 8 PM EST. Check it out!
HUGE Day Here at DF!
Feb 17, 2007 at 04:21 PM

We have not one, not two, but three important announcements to make today!  First off, as picked by you all the fans, today we will reveal the title of season 3's premiere episode!  Next we have the first episode of our podcast up.  Exciting stuff.  Also, we will announce our "Elemental Week."  All details are below!

*Drum roll please* As promised, the season 3 premiere title is here!  By way of poll the users spoke and told me to just reveal the title this time!  So, that's what I'll do.  If you want to know the title here it is (highlight): The Awakening.  Speculate away my fellow fans!

Secondly, bu Feng podcast titled "From the Spirit World" has recorded its first episode!  Visit the official "From the Spirit World" Podcast site for details on the premiere episode of our new podcast.  As with anyone's first podcast, we have some things we need to work out.  Admin Dylan and fellow Avatar fan AJ are the hosts.  You may need to adjust your volume at times, as sometimes it is a bit hard to hear.

And last but not least, Elemental Week!  We're happy to introduce Elemental Week, a new week-long celebration of Avatar.  It will be held March 5th-9th.  Each day will have its own unique name:

Monday, March 5th = Water Day
Tuesday, March 6th = Earth Day
Wednesday, March 7th = Fire Day
Thursday, March 8th = Air Day
Friday, March 9th= Avatar Day

Each day will consist of a multi-site Scavenger Hunt where users will be challenged to surf different Avatar fansites for letters and/or clues to figure out a phrase.  We'll also have a live trivia each day, and reveal winners to our contests.  Speaking of contests:

Monday we'll reveal the winners to the Icon contest
Tuesday we'll reveal the winnes to our Original Character contest
Wednesday we'll reveal the winners to our Fanvid contest
Thursday we'll reveal the winners to our Fanart contest
Friday we'll reveal the winners of our Fanfiction contest

There are no guidelines for these submissions, except there will only be 3 allowed per person per category (so only three icons, three fanvids, etc.).  There are specific categories for Fanfiction and Fanvids.  For Fanfiction: Action/Adventure, Drama/Tragedy, Romance and Other.  And for the Fanvids: Shipping, Characters and Other.  Other pretty much covers everything else, so the contest is wide open for creativity.  But all entiresdo have to be Avatar-related.

All entries can be emailed to .  Prizes will be awarded, but are TBA.  All entires for all contests are due on *EDIT* March 1st.  Please include your name and a website you'd like to be credited with your entry (if you have one).  Thanks and good luck to all!

Avatar Perfect 2-for-2 in 34th Annies
Feb 12, 2007 at 11:54 AM

Last night the 34th Annual Annie Awards ceremony was held, where animation's best and brightest in feature film and television are recognized.

We are proud to report Avatar won in both the categories it was nominated!  Giancarlo Volpe was nominated for "Directing in an Animated Television Production" for "The Drill" episode, and Yu Jae Myung won for "Character Animation in a Television Production" for "The Blind Bandit."  This brings the trophy case for Avatar up to 5 total, 3 from the Annies (one win last year for Lauren MacMullan for "Storyboarding in an Animated Television Production" for the episode "The Deserter") and two Pulcinella Awards in 2005 (Best Series and Best Action/Adventure Series).  Congratulations are extended to Giancarlo, Yu and the entire Avatar staff!  Keep up the good work guys!

Feb 11, 2007 at 10:41 PM

ImageDVDEmpire.com reports Book 2, Volume 3 will come to DVD on May 22nd, just over a month after Volume 2 will be released.  This DVD will contain the episodes "The Desert," "The Serpent's Pass," "The Drill," "City of Walls and Secrets" and "The Tales of Ba Sing Se."  It will also contain the 3rd volume of the comic book series being released within the DVDs for the volumes of Book 2.  No other special features are known at this time.

On the toy front, Nickelodeon has unveiled some new Avatar toys by Mattel.  Here's a description:

  • Aang's Waterbending Blaster: Kids can emulate their hero by mastering the art of air bending in their own backyard! Launches mighty waterblasts or ice darts.
  • Animal Armor Deluxe Figure Assortment: For the first time, Avatar incorporates battle features into six inch scale figures, bringing the action inside the figure at the touch of a button. Assortment includes Dragon Armor Aang, Rhino Armor Zuko, and Wolf Armor Sokka.
  • Battle Launchers Assortment: Bring the flying action and bending excitement to life with the battle launchers. Aang soars 20 feet along with sound effects and phrases. Includes Aang, Momo, Zuko and Fire Hawk.

Nothing to my knowledge has been revealed about dates of these releases.  Oh and don't forget to vote for your favorite on-episode character and favorite episode writer in the DF Fan Awards if you haven't yet!
